I am a recent laptop purchaser and don't have much of a clue about Wireless and how it works. When I went to the library today, they handed me two typed pages of instructions and it didn't work. Another Mac user was there too, it didn't work for her either.
I see people in the coffee shops using the internet on their laptops. I haven't tried that there yet.
Could you give me some easy tips on what to do? I usually can figure things out on my computer, but this time I am coming up with zero! : (
Thanks.

On the upper right hand corner of your screen, near the clock, is a symbol that looks like an wide ice cream cone. It is either all white with a black outline, or it is a bunch of grey stripes, OR it is a bunch of black stripes. Click it. It should say at the very top, greyed out, "Airport: On". If it says Off, click underneath it where it says, "Turn Airport On." If you are in range of a wireless network, you will be able to see it in this list. It will have a name, like linksys or TMobile or 2WIRE20374. You can click on the name of the network in this list to join it - if it is open and does not require a password it will join it with no problem and you will be all set. If it needs a password, you will need to enter it in the window that will pop up.
If you cannot click these things, you may not have an Airport card or you may not be running OS X. If you are running OS 9 (striped colored apple in the upper left hand corner of your machine), there will be a control strip on the bottom left corner of your computer and you can make it pop out by clicking it or clicking and dragging it. Somewhere on there will be a thing with 4 dots, clicking that will allow you to join a wireless network.

The Mac address that the 2nd answerer spoke of did no longer propose a Mac laptop yet Media address administration, it rather is a stressful coded address utilized with the help of all stressful under pressure out Ethernet and WiFi gadgets. Your WiFi router can block computers with the help of their MAC address.

first make sure you have an airport card in your laptop
second make sure the airport is set to receive signals, this can be done through system prefs
third download the widget called airtrafficcontrol to show you how strong the signals are for the wireless networks around you
once you get a signal an icon should appear in the menu bar which allows you to choose which network you want, choose it and surf the web
hope this helps :)
and if you get the chance, please sign my Guestmap, thanx :)

From what I know, the MacBooks search for signals automatically, and asks you if you join any of them, if you have the Wifi atenna turned on. I believe they give you some kind of message. No experience using this feature myself. Hope this helps.

put your cursor on the wireless network connection icon on the right bottom corner, click on that , and click on the view wireless networks, and when you see a connection that doesn't say secured wireless network, click on that, and then click connect.
