Maybe they believe that you are an agnostic. There are many people who do not follow a religion, but have their own belief system. Also it isn't always best to assume things about people that you've met. You have to get to know them first.

It is hard to tell what people are these days. There are some people who will wear a cross but are not Christians. Also, most Christians don't wear a cross unless they're Catholics.

In our human world we will always be judged for how we look rather than learning who we are on the inside. In other words judging the book by it's cover rather than what the story is on the inside. Could I tell if this book is a good one without reading the whole book?

I get questioned alot just because I wear a cross but I am not Catholic but am a Christian. I started wearing the cross because I felt it saved my life when I was in a serious head-on car accident. After the accident I found this cross in the coin pocket of my car. I had this strong feeling to always wear the cross after that.

Theism is such a ubiquitous presence in American society that one can't help assuming (based simply on the odds) that any person you meet will believe in something. The last I heard only about 8% of the population labels themselves an agnostic/atheist (which I realize are two completely seperate ideologies, but I don't know the figures for them seperately). What we have to remember as part of this minority (I am in this demographic as well) is that if we want others to be tolerant of our beliefs, we must be tolerant of theirs as well. If someone assumes that you are a Christian, it is not meant as an attack on you; simply correct their error if it bothers you so that the same mistake is not repeated. The important thing is not to use words like "myths" when ameliorating this situation; you don't want to appear condescending. It is that kind of elitism that gives agnostics/athiests a bad reputation.

Possibly because they are not psychic and have no way to know your life history except to ask. Since you make no mention of being atheist, as in "Hi, I'm in AA and I'm an atheist" upon introduction, they have the tedious duty of risking your ire by asking. So sorry to waste your precious time in the social niceties and all.

You should wear a hat with the Atheist symbol or Darwin Fish on it. And an "Atheist On Board" sign on your car. And "In Case Of Rapture, Can I Have Your Car?" bumper sticker. That should settle it!

Most people believe that because when they think of an atheist that see something like a criminal or some other evil being.

why can't you tell I'm a catholic when you meet me?...i don't wear a cross around my neck (or any place else) ..i don't use sentences that say "God" ; "Jesus" ; "bless" ; "pray"

same reason....when you meet someone, you know nothing about them..it's only AFTER you get to know them that you find out all these things

It's a social reaction. Theism is the "socially accepted way of things." Most people simply have had no experience with atheists or people of other beliefs, and often they have been so brainwashed that they will be unable to accept other beliefs.

C'est la vie.

do you make it clear you believe in the myth of Darwinian evolution?

Maybe you should stamp a sign on your forehead that says:

"I believe Darwin even tho' the fossil record shows he was wrong"

This should help you see how you can make your ignorance and folly more apparent to those you meet.
