They seem to be missing now. Apparently, they were meant for the sight of a special few.

It is thought to be an ancient language which was communicated to Smith via a heavenly apparition. However, the tablets have disappeared. Does anyone know what happened to them? And how was he able to transcribe them, being so poorly educated? Did God guide his pen?

Joseph Smith, like L. Ron Hubbard did with Scientology, invented Mormonism.

Reformed Egyptian
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Book of Mormon (a sacred text of Mormonism) states that it was written with "reformed Egyptian" (Mormon 9:32) characters on plates of ore (1 Nephi 19:1) by Messianic Israelite prophets between 600 B.C. and A.D. 421. Joseph Smith, Jr. (the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement) said that the last of those prophets appeared to him on September 21, 1823 in resurrected form, told him gold plates were deposited near his home, and commanded him to translate them. Smith published the Book of Mormon in 1830 as that translation. There is no consensus outside Mormonism that the Book of Mormon is a translated ancient record, but Latter Day Saints generally believe that the book was produced entirely from these ancient gold plates inscribed with reformed Egyptian characters

That is basically the language written on the tablets Joseph Smith translated through the power of God, with the Urim and Thummim.
The tablets were only available to Joseph after much trial of his faith, it took four years of him returning to the same spot each year before he actually was given them. The angel Moroni gave them to him and also was the one who took them back when Joseph was finished translating. Why would God leave them out in the open for all the earth to see? Pearls before swine you know....
Why ask Why? God wanted it that way, who are we to expect that he owes us an explaination of why he does something???

I find it interesting that a net search for 'reformed Egyptian' leads one directly to the Book of Mormon. This suggests to me that as a language, it was created by Joseph Smith to lend credibility to his religious thoughts and beliefs.
There is nothing to suggest that Smith was able to read ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs and at that time, only a handful of people in the world was able to do so. So, he could not use actual Hieroglyphs to create those infamous 'tablets from God'
The book of Mormon says that the writing style was based on the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics, but were altered (re-formed), by the Mormons, so that no one else would be able to read their sacred texts.

Basically, it is something that cults do in order to create 'divine reference' for their beliefs. They make up a new style of writing, create a Sacred Book and teach it to a select few, who then go out and use that book to teach others of the 'one true path' to heaven.

Yah, good answers above mostly. Tablets Smitty found were sheets of metal, not little pills. Certainly not LSD, which wasn't invented until the 20th Century (initially considered as a treatment for mental illness).
