Once you realize you've been a victim of identity theft, time is of the essence, so act quickly. U.S. residents should call the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Identity Theft Hotline immediately. The toll-free number is 1-877-IDTHEFT. The FTC will file your complaint and help you deal with the credit-related problems that could result.
Next take these steps:
Contact credit bureaus
Call the fraud hotline of any one of these three major credit bureaus. They'll place a fraud alert on your credit file to alert financial institutions.
Equifax: (800) 525-6285
TransUnion: (800) 680-7289
Experian: (888) 397-3742
Cancel credit cards
Cancel the credit card accounts that you know or think have been used for unauthorized transactions.
Go to the police
Go to your local police station and file a police report to submit to credit card companies and banks that will require proof of identity theft.
Call the bank, check with the post office and call the media if no one's helping.

Go through the Fraud Protection or Security Department of your bank or credit card company, they will send you forms to fill out stating that it wasn't you that made these charges, and that they were not authorized by you. They will correct it, stick in there, we went through the same thing with credit card theft and then with debit card theft grrr, it made us very upset and frustrated but within 3 months we got our money back in our account and the charges were wiped. The monster that did this to us bought clothes at BeBe's grrrrr, and they were shipped to us omg! I sent them back and wrote BeBe's to close those accounts that were fraudulent! Don't worry, but do go throught the fraud protection or security department, each institution calls it differently.

Call and write a letter to your credit card compnay, ASAP, so they can cancel your card and issue you a new one. If there is fraud, they will put a fraud alert on your account. There is an 800 number on the back of your card, you can call tonight, to get the ball rolling.

I would say you need to get to a lawyer....fast. If they are telling you they won't close it.....that sounds fishy....illegal.
If you call and report the card lost/stolen....they will at least cancel that card. At least whoever has your number won't be able to use it anymore.
