The transmission needs an overhaul. Can be quite expensive to repair or replace. If the car is not worth it, do not spend the money on fixing it. If you do not want to make payments, etc., it would be cheaper in the long run to fix the car.

Is it an automatic transmission? If it is, check the fluid level under the hood. You may have ran the fluid too low, or the filter screen is clogged.

If it's a standard transmission, you have a bad gear box, and need to replace it. Check the local repair shops, and find out what it will cost. You can also look to junkyards for a used transmission. I have done that, and installed it with help from friends.

What car is it?. If its a good sport/mini cooper/ some cool classic car, than maybe repair it. If not why not go for a new cool car, since its been 8 long years. But always watch your budget first. You don't want to Overspend/waste money.

Have a Good Day!
Cheers!

Is the gear stick real loss in between the gears? If so from your gear stick to the gear box is what is called linkages and nylon bushes. There are 8 bushes that slowly wear away. Or even come undone. If you can safely look under your car go for it.
