I don't know if this question has been asked or not, so sorry if it has. But should the government really pay to rebuild New Orleans, a city that was built below sea level. First let me say that I have personally donated money to the cause, so I am in no way trying to take away from the suffering invoked upon these people, however, will trillions of dollars in government debt, should the government rebuild a city that is destined by its location to at some point fail again due to nature. Would the money not be better spent to relocate these people, as sad as it is for them to loose their homes and memories, essentially everything, should we the people set them up for the same scenario?

Ask yourself this question: WHY is all the focus on New Orleans -- which is really the smallest amount of folks who sustained damages to their residences and their livelihoods over the past 2 hurricane seasons? WHY is all the money going to New Orleans and WHERE is it going to at this time?

.... the question is.. should we be giving our donations to the government and hoping that they will actually use if for rebuilding New Orleans? Millions and millions were donated, and yet there has been very little progress. Trailers sit empty, food sits and rots.. this is supposed to be America. poor, poor organization on all levels. personally, I think the Red Cross and some of the church groups have been doing a better job than the government. I suspect a good deal of that money will end up being used for the Iraq war.. the rest swallowed up in huge salaries for so called do gooder politicians and big business. Always, when the government is in control of public funds they screw it up.. this will be the same.

My feeling is that the government should help rebuild to a point (low interest, subsidized loans). But just because you lived there doesn't mean you are entitled to a brand new home at the expense of the government and tax payers. The insurance companies also need to chip in their fair share. As for the people without adequate insurance, then that was the risk they assumed.

that's true..

i do not think the government should just jump in at once and give the money..instead, there should be small, incremented, payments to those who lived in new orleans. you cannot be prepared for natural disasters, they just happen..so we do not know if new orleans (god fobid) could be hit by another katrina within the next five years or within the next four decades..and, in the best scenario, to never be hit again.

the government would just be wasting its money to revive something that can be shattered again, that is for sure. but the people need a place to stay. i would suggest that the government sets up an incentive for the citizens of new orleans to move somewhere closer. such an incentive will prevent them from longing to stay in new orleans, and if enough of them leave new orleans, there will be no recycled money put into the new orleans situation.

i truly sympathize for those who lost their homes..and families.

uh ya! hundreds of other places in the world have the same or worse problem but they have not had to have a mass population movement. the US government is just not too enthusiastic about this whole thing, specially since their moronic government is already wasting more than enough money everyday to fight a phony "war on terror". im not a politician but im pretty sure i would put the safety and demands of my nation's own people first before going to kill already unfortunate poor people in iraq and afghanistan. that extra money could provide long lasting secrurity for New Orleans. but im sure the bush administration already know that!

We should call in Dutch engineers. There lives depend on controlling sea walls. The Netherlands is below sea level and they have developed a system of pumping water that works.

well you difinitely have a point. I know its going to cost a lot of money, but if they fix the levee's properly, I think it should be ok, its the governments fault to begin with because they knew that was going to happen. to be honest with you, I'd like to see some money going into rebuilding the health care situation , because its so expenssive getting health insurance.

ask yourself this question...if your city that u had lived in for your entire life got completely destroyed...would you want the government to help pay to re-build it and try to make it as close as possible to what it was before? i'd think so.
