This is because cows are not made of suede but suede is made of cow hide. The cowhide is processed to make suede.

Once it is processed, the cowhide changes, it is no longer same as the original cowhide that could get wet covered by cow poo and all that.

where did you hear rain would ruin a suede coat? All you have to do to make it look good as new is brush it with a stiff brush, against the grain.

You can by some spray that they use for leather shoes and it will repel water on the coat
