School with a summer break has also proven to be an effective means of educating children.

My understanding is that it has proven to be efficient for the school districts rather than effective for the children. The schools can fit more students in, but the children have unpredictable vacations. The problem is especially acute for families with multiple children who are on vacation at different times or for single parents, but even for others, the lack of activities during the time when the child has vacation (think vacation with no summer camps, programs, etc.) becomes difficult. I know that many of my friends who have had children in year-round schools have been panicky about how to handle a child who is out of school in January or February when no parent is off work and there is no one available to care for them.

Disagree! Education is important, but I think they've gone too far with it... there are other important things too, like friends, family, alone time. They are teaching kids in kindergarden reading, writing and math for gosh sakes!! What ever happened to sharing and social skills, singing and playing... just learning to be away from home? They're PUSHING kids to grow up waaay to fast these days! And given way too much homework!

If they think extending school time is effective, maybe a compromise would be to start school a week or two early in the fall, but NOT year round! Kids really need some time away from school for themselves so they don't get burned out!

It has proven to be a way to relieve parents of the need to care for their children. Summertime is one the best things about being a child and you would deprive your kids of that? There is plenty of time for the real world after they grow up.

It would surely help the kids learn more but l think they will suffer from stress and exhaustion. We adults are already complaining that we have too much to do but have little time for ourselves. What about the kids?! They need to enjoy their childhood so we shouldn't rob it from them. We don't have to be geniuses to run this world. Kindness and compassion is what to be taught more...at home and in school.

agree. An amazing amount is forgotten over the too long summer vacation. Keep 'em in all year round!

I disagree, because over 2 months of vacation will wipe their intelligence out. No one will remember as much information as they did before they went on vacation.

agree, easier to retain information when you don't have a 2 month break to forget everything
