I think they accept the likelihood of their existence, but require actual proof.
Carl Sagan said something like, extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs.

I believe that there are Astronomers would are merely hopefull that there exist. Our Solar System is unique and, to this present hour, no other Solar Systems have ever been seen even through the world's most powerful land-based and space telescopes. And astronomers will never be able to "see" other planetary bodies in a Solar System because the system would be far beyond our most powerful telescopes. So far, the universe has proven to be a very desolate place.

Most do based on the mathematical probability. They should believe because we are already here. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species and your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

I'm not an astronomer but I am a firm believer that with the size of our galaxy, what are the chances that there are other living creatures on other planets? I know astronomers would think that too.

I think most astronomers believe there is probably life out there somewhere (I know I do), but they also don't think that anyone has actually contacted us or visited us yet.

How could anyone not believe they exist. Do you realize how huge space is? With all the planets, known and unknown, how could anyone be so shallow to think Earth inhabits the only living creatures?

I think that we have two separate things here. Astronomers study astronomy, which is the science and the observation of extraterrestrial objects. Belief in extraterrestrial beings goes into personal beliefs, philosophy, and a number of personal things. Science is one thing, and personal opinions and personal beliefs are another-!

Scientists deal with fact, not fantasy.
It is possible but unproven that they exist.
