Priory of Scion

I think Pere Sauniere didn't actually belong to any group for certain. There are various tales about him suddenly becoming wealthy. I saw this stuff before "The Da Vinci Code" was written. Someone theorized there were codes in paintings by Poussin, rather than Da Vici, and that they helped Sauniere find something valuable in the church over which he presided. In the 1950's, a Frenchman, whose name I cannot recall now, chartered a group called the Priory of Sion and planted documents relating to it. Leonardo da Vinci was on the list of supposed past members. I think there was an earlier group with this name in the 11th Century, but it didn't last. The 1950's fraud pretended it did. Sauniere's mysterious sudden wealth is the only thing that is used to connect him to this dumb conspiracy theory. Dan Brown has made a fortune off the nonsense.

In the book, he was in the Priory of Scion. That is a much debated group as the actual paperwork appeared with names (in reality) including DaVinci on paper that would date it to the time it was supposed to have been written. No one claimed knowledge of it's appearance and it has been described by some as an elaborate hoax. To some, it is held as proof that Jesus had living relatives (think of the number of brothers and sisters He had, someone has to have surviving descendants, right?)
