I've been biting my nails since I can remember. I cannot recall a time when I have had nails above my fingertips. I have tryed all sorts of remedies, from an elastic band on wrist to the bitter polish, which I just got used to chewing. It's even worst now, I have got barely any nails left to work with and now I'm going for the skin around the nails. It's yuck! Please help me, if any one has any remedies that would be great.

I had the same problem until recently. I was using my fingers to underscore a point I was making to my supervisor. I was quite embarrassed when I had to hurry it up because I saw my own nails looking so ugly. To top that off, two of my coworkers were in the hallway talking and said, " Look at her nails. Come here. See, she bites them down to the bone. " The other girl said, "Ugh! I'd hate to have my nails look like that. What make you do that?" I replied just an unfortunate habit. That's when I realized I had to psyche myself from doing it because it's an unconscious behavior. Once you start, you can't stop. My nails are quite nice now and I can pride myself when handing papers to others or writing a check at the store. I started off using the fake nails, but I wouldn't let the tech file them before putting them on. Filing damages the nail bed. They are quite hard and somehow, though I tried to bite them here and there, I couldn't. I noticed I would resort to trying to bite when I was anxious or in deep thought. I had to find other ways to handle my issues. If all else fails, think of your nails as skin that hardens. But, would you take a bite off your arm instead? Prob. not. You can exert some inner controls but its a mind game. Good Luck to you and soon you'll be buying polish like me...

What made me stop is what you actually do when biting your nails. Everything you touch leaves something in your nails....wheter its as big as dirt or as small as skin cells or germs. Also will power. I would tell myself NO every time I noticed I start.

My mom stopped by getting fake nails.

you can go to the doctor, and you could ask about this polish you put on your nails so that when you bite them, it tastes awful! It got one of my friend's little sister to stop biting her nails :)

Try handling hot peppers. That will set your mouth on fire.....Maybe you will not like that taste and think twice before you bite your nails again.
Good Luck

Have a nice day!

Figure out the emotional reason why you are doing it (nervousness, insecurities, etc.) Fix yourself from the inside out. Those other remedies proved ineffective and nonetheless would have been only temporal.

i stopped after i started paying attention to what other people look like when they do it. every time i went to bite my nails i picture what i looked like doing it. so i guess vanity got me to stop.

oh you could try chewing gum! i just thought of that one....replace one addiction with another.

start going to the nail salon. Get weekly manicures (maybe even acrylic).....pamper them, spend money on them, and you'll be more diligent in keeping them looking pretty. That did it for me.
