It is called the auricle. I don't have that particular body part pierced but a co-worker does and she said it hurt a bit more than regular earlobe piercing. She said it felt and sounded 'crunchy'.

I saw someone answer the tragus. That is the bit very close to the ear canal. The auricle is the large curved portion of the ear. Which piece of cartilage did you want to get pierced?

The piece of cartilage in the front of the ear is called the traegus(if you are in Great Britain, Australia or New Zealand), The American version of the word is Tragus. The cartilage in the upper part of the ear is the helix.
