I heard it passed but was controversial. Why?

Politicians from both sides of the isle opposed it.

There were several factors why:

- Afraid it would make us look more bigoted... summarizing.

- Economics - many businesses make money from translating

- Some republicans opposed it because they are pro-illegals.

- Some democrats wanted it because it break the stigma that democrats are pro-illegal.

- Some on both sides were against it trying to win the hispanic vote because it will soon have large numbers.

I'm not a politician, but I'm against a law making English the official language. I don't see the need for it. It ain't broken, so don't fix it.

Actually it is controversial due to economic policy. This country takes in BILLIONS each year from foreign tourism. We also take in 20 or more times that much each year in foreign imports and exports. It's just protecting business interests.

what language do you speak? laws are written in the language of the majority. Controversial? Who cares? If you don't understand the law the way it is written, GO BACK TO WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM...!
