I LOVE Oprah Winfrey---But I couldnt believe how AWFUL the made for TV movie turned out...

I totally thought the scenes and acting was bad.
And whose idea was it for that light-skinned shortie to play TeaCake?

Maybe that's because it's my favorite book.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF IT?

I agree; the book is one of my favorites, and I couldn't wait to see what Oprah was able to do with it on screen. I was sorely disappointed because it came across as a sexual awakening plot when it was more about a woman's fullness of life, including her sexuality but going far beyond it, too. Halle Berry could have done much better with a full script, one that stayed closer to the novel.

Granted, it is extremely difficult to adapt a book into a movie because the screenwriter typically takes ten scenes from the book and must connect those scenes without using the same details and transitions contained in the novel.

Perhaps if Oprah could have contracted with PBS to do the movie, it could have been aligned more with the novel.

The book was excellent. Loved it. But I saw the movie some time after reading the book. I liked the movie as well. You know though, when books are really good, movies can almost never do it any justice.

i enjoyed the book very much, therefore i refused to see the movie and have it ruined for me. besides, i cannot stand hallie berry/barry? so that was a major strike against it. i will relive the book in my imagination where it lives on, wonderful and true, and not jaded by the tacky immitation tv movie. wasnt it a tv movie?
