I think that the best option is to go with a group that has both a doctor and a midwife.
That way, you can see them both, at different check-up visits, and see which one you feel more comfortable with. Also, if say you do choose the midwife, and then you have complications, it's very easy to just start seeing the doctor instead. Or, if you're seeing teh doctor and everything is going along easily, you can switch to the midwife if you'd like.
When I was pregnant, I started out with a group consisting of 2 doctors, and I absolutely hated one of them. The very first time I met her, she asked me if I had seriously considered having an abortion.
Shortly after, I switched groups, and the one I went to had 2 doctors and a midwife. I saw one of the doctors at my first visit, and then the midwife. I felt so comfortable with her, and she always had the time to go over everything with me, when sometimes it can seem like the doctor is trying to rush you out.
Since I was having no complications, and everything was going fine, I continued to see the midwife. My sister-in-law, who was pregnant at the same time, was seeing one of the doctors exclusively, because she began to have difficulties towards the end, and she just felt more comfortable with the doctor.
The best thing was, that at the very end of my pregnancy, my son decided that he didn't want to come out unless he could come out rear-end first, the midwife was able to call in a doctor, who already had my information available to him, to come a preform a c-section.
If a group isn't an option for you, then I think that I would go with the midwife. They have lower rates of using forceps, vaccuum extraction, or episiotomies during labor, and are more likely to let you keep trying for a vaginal birth, rather than give up and say, okay, c-section!
Good luck, and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I think a doctor is better. You never know what problems can arise and in my case I'm lucky to have had a very skilled doctor. I beld out after giving birth and had to have a D&C because I retained a peice of the placenta. I passed out 2x and later was told I could have dies if my doctor hadn't acted so quickly. I had a healthy pregnancy and no one saw that coming. Either way you go it's important to do it at the hospital just in case something goes wrong with you or the baby. I do agree that midwives probably have better bedside manner, but that's what a doula is for. You can have a doula present when you give birth who will help you through the whole thing while the doc catches the baby.

Strictly up to you. When you say midwife... are you considering a home birth? I personally wouldn't chance it.. god forbid something goes wrong. But I've known a couple of people who have chosen that route and had no problems. Just make sure you do a complete check on the person you choose and talk to as many of the people she's helped to see what they have to say. Also consider whether you'll want pain meds and what they can provide in that way. Many midwives don't believe in meds.
If you feel more comfortable at a hospital... you could have a doula help you along.

i have had both. Its kind of a personal choice. I loved my midwifes, had them for two kids, but this time I am with a Doctor. You will find that for the most part midwifes are more careful and care a little more, after all most of them have had kids before. it just depends. Go spend little time in each of there offices, they will let you. Talk to the doctor vs. midwifes and see what they say.

MIDWIFE! Midwives are skilled professionals who are trained to handle most deliveries. They know when to call a doctor in if necessary. Look for someone who is registered and go meet with them. Rather than the quickey 10 minute appt with a doctor you get a good 45 minutes with a midwife. She gets to know you and does not treat your pregnancy like an illness. If you did become ill then she would call a doctor.

If this is your first and you're under the age of 35 and in good health, a midwife is great, but if you're over 35 or in bad health (obesity, diabetes etc) you're better off going to a doctor who can follow you up in case of a problem, like you need glucose due to gestational diabetes. But midwives are great in cases of good health and under 35 mom.

I used an actual OB/GYN for my pregnancies. It is a matter of personal preference, but I feel more comfortable with a doctor. I guess I felt that if a complication came up, a doctor who could perform surgery or other procedures would be better. Congrats!

I have had all three of my children in three different hospitals,my eldest there were doctors present only because she was born breech, but my other 2 were born normally and they were delivered by the midwifes, the doctors only showed themselves after my babies were born.

I think a doctor would be best since this is your first baby. You can go to Lamaze classes to prepare you and your partner for labor and the child's birth, if you want to.
Congratulations!
