Hmmm. Lets bypass opinions for a moment. According to webster a sport is according to miriam webster:
Function: noun
1 a : a source of diversion : RECREATION b : sexual play c (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2) : a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in
2 a : PLEASANTRY, JEST b : often mean-spirited jesting : MOCKERY, DERISION
3 a : something tossed or driven about in or as if in play b : LAUGHINGSTOCK
I believe cheerleading falls in those lines.
Secondly, I've watched competitive cheerleading on ESPN. It can be quite competitive and very challenging. The cheerleaders have to be on their top form and in good shape. They have to work in a cohesive unit. They must have to put on a great performance and develop good choreography. At its most competitive levels, I'd definitely say its a sport.
Thirdly, does it matter as long as you can have a good time with it? Does it develop team spirit? Does it provide a good pasttime? Does it develop you as an individual? Do you get a sense of accomplishment? So if somebody wants to discredit you for what you do, who are they to say otherwise?

Yeah it's a sport. I was doing a segment in school about cheerleading and for a week (prolly a little bit more than that) I had to follow the cheerleading team around at practices and games.
They practice, like ppl do in a real sport.
The go to competitions, like ppl do in a real sport
They have rules, like real sports
They have championships, like real sports
They have a point system, like real sports
(It's something like, if you do a technique wrong you lose a point or so depending on what you did...correct me if I'm wrong)
It's not really the ditzy, "OMGosh Becky..." type thing it's made out to be. (not saying there are some girls who aren't like that, just a majority who aren't)

I have to agree with what one girl said, as long as you are going to competitions and actually competeing against someone on a points program then yes your Cheerleading would be a sport. I hate the girls that say but I work so hard but can't back it up with even a mention in a program book.
Hell I was on Color gaurd and I personally hated most of our cheerleaders but if you put in the time to compete you deserve the credit.
Lord knows in my book COLOR GUARD is a sport and so is cheer leading

Yeah. It's very physical and technical. If poker is a sport than cheerleading is like a really sporty sport.

I say yes it is. Cheerleading includes stunts where you throw people up and that's not exactly easy. And when you're holding someone up it's not for 3 seconds you can go on for a long time and its a real strain to you biceps and your other muscles. soooo YES CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT!!
