i sell car parts,a friend who is after a certain part, asks if i can leave that part out for him to pick up after closing time, because the customer has been buying parts off me for a long time i agree to his request.I then go home leaving the requested part in a seculeded place on my shops premisses. An hour later i get a call from the customer telling me the part is no where its supposed to be.
My question is, do i wear the loss, or does the part belong to the customer once the request has been made to leave the part out in a public place?..knuckles have flown regarding this question !!!!!

"Who owes *whom*?"
I'd have to say it's your loss, and just let the friend/customer know you can't do that anymore.

I apologize but you bear the loss on this one. You could have met him somewhere with the part but since you put it outside...even if it was hidden, it is your loss. Why should he pay for something he didn't get? I would never, ever do business that way. Next time make other arrangements for pick-ups. Good Luck! And if the knuckles are flying your way...duck!

Do you trust the customer? If you know for sure that they aren't lying, then chalk it up to B.S. and move on. You wouldn't want to lose a valuable customer. But if you don't, you'll still have to wear the cost, and don't be so nice next time. You know the saying... the customer is always right (unfortunately)!

My opinion is that you took the risk leaving it out, you have to take the loss.
