Probably because of sexual discrimination. Men have stronger stamina than women, that's why women only play a maximum of 3 sets and men a maximum of 5 sets.

You can ask the same question on all sports. Why do the ladies get a closer tee shot in golf?
Why don't men and women compete in sports like basketball, football, baseball or any other sport?
Why don't the Olympics have men and women complete together in things like field and track, skiing, swimming etc etc etc.
Not trying to sound like a male chauvinist pig but men are stronger and have greater endurance.
Can you name me one world record that the best score or time is held by a women? I can't think of one.
I am not saying that all men are better than all women because clearly there are some athletic women out there. But the best records are held by the men.

It is how the game started. Men used to always play best of five, women best of three. Now, the crying shame is that Mixed Doubles plays best of two, with a third 'set' tiebreaker. And that at the US Open the men and women simply play a last set tie breaker instead of going until one of the players wins by two (which is how most of the other grand slams do it, or at least Wimbledon does, and Wimbledon rocks!!)

Back when the rules were made it was probably thought that women were the weaker sex and this was their way of treating them as such. Now that the female has become a well conditioned and very capable athlete, I would love to see them in 5 set matches.

coz when the rules were made women were thought of by the weaker sex and male were the more dominant sex....and the rules could have been made up by a male!!
