Racism is an irrational fear that probably afflicts all races. In general whites are more visible and resented because the high tide of white supremacy is receding around the world. Some of these people feel that their privilege is threatened, especially those who have little reason to claim privilege, and perhaps its easier to devalue those they see as taking or threatening to take what they think is rightfully theirs. Also they may feel uncomfortable with other cultures.
As to the tans, I don't think they're darkening their skin to imitate darker people. I'd guess Europeans have soaked up the sun in the summer for hundreds of years because it's so dark in the winter, and European migrants to America do it too. And skin exposure to the sun has been considered healthful until quite recent times. I think racism and getting a tan are two separate issues.
This is a good question, and it does expose an irony of life in America. Racism is pernicious and difficult to get at and slow to change. Unfortunately human nature being what it is, we have to make change over generations. But don't give up hope, consider how much our society has changed in the past fifty years! The internal change that drives social change occurs one person at a time. So we each need to strive to change ourselves, and challenge it when we see it. Unfortunately we see so little because it is so subtle.

First of all, I'm not racist but I do tan and I know why people do it. It's because tanning helps with poor complexion issues, it decreases the appearance of cellulite or dimpling of the skin which, let's face it, no matter what color we are, we all try to hide. It also helps to make a pale complected person look more healthy.

Maybe its not the "skin tone" they don't like, but the stereotypes associated with them.
Also, a white person with a tan still looks white, they aren't even close to the color of (most) black people.
Why do some black people bleach their skin?
Why do some asians get surgery to give them eye creases?
Because they want to conform to societies ideals of beauty.

I personaly think white people look better pale, at least I do. I dont se why they want a tan, I think it is becuase everyone tells them to have a tan. I hate when people tell me I am too pale, I like being pale.
As for other people, not liking black people and liking black tones are too different things. I mean, they might like black people better if they are light, but in the end they are ignorant to hate black people. Really, it is ignorant to not like people regardless of race, people should just accept all people.

A white person could never attain the color of blacks by tanning. That's an genetic impossibility. I'd never want black skin because it's prone to razor bumps, keloid scars, and ashyness and looks really dull and too dark and is very prone to blotchyness (uneven dark and lighter patches)...however, I do like the look of a golden tan in the summer time.
Oh, and Luckie Ladee Pryde and cinnamin&spice:
I think it's ludacris to compare the .001% of white women who get surgical injections to the 90% of black women who straighten their hair (or wear a weave or wig), in addition to using bleach creams to lighten their skin and wearing blue/green contact lenses (such as people that we all known such as Lil' Kim, Janet Jackson, and Beyonce).

Simple, because a tan on a white person gives the impression of wealth, especially in temperate climes like here in the UK. But think nice thoughts, a tan on a white body leads to malignant melanomas.

My daughter used to ask me this all the time when she was little. My Aunt made a racist remark once in front of her and she turned around and said but Ryan (my aunts son) is black too, he is very dark complected, shut my Aunt up quicker then I could. She was about 8 at the time.

Gee, just when I think I have heard some blacks whine and complain and blame whites for everything under the sun, this comes along. How did you manage to build this pathetic bridge to racism? lol Quite a stretch don't you think? lol Pretty lame logic there actually. Now whites aren't even allowed to lay out on the beach because it "means" something. Grow up really! Is there anything left that we can do that you are not going to make a something out of a nothing of and be offended? lol
