I can't find an answer, but most likely since homosexuality has been around for as long as humans, the first American to be publicly acknowledged as being gay in America would probably have been around the time of the founding of America (1776-1783). Obviously there has been publicly acknowledged homosexuals long long before then.

I think it was Rock Hudson. I was going to say Liberace...but I don't think he ever actually 'came out'...everyone just KNEW. and he never denied it.
I remember the ignorance of all of us at the time Rock Hudson came out and said he was dying of Aids, bcz Linda Evans had a kissing scene with him in Dallas (TV serial) and everyone was all freaked out about that (& I think she was a little concerned too), that she might have'caught it' from him. The story was in all the tabloids. Well, no one knew anything about it then. It was several YEARS after that, when we all found out Aids couldn't be passed on through kissing mouth to mouth.
Rock Hudson shocked the world when he said he was... Even Doris Day had no idea. (Elizabeth Taylor started her crusade against AIDS because of him, but mostly because of Montgomery Cliff---who was also gay but never came out; as a matter of fact, he was tormented about it. In the movie "It Happened One Summer", he was truly tormented and it showed in his acting---& that was when Elizabeth became so empathetic to those suffering with the disease...because, unlike Doris Day, Elizabeth Taylor knew---because Montomery Cliff had already talked to her about his torment, and she recognized that in Rock Hudson, and he also knew about it and trusted her because of how she had been such a good friend to Monty (Cliff).
I'm open to being corrected, but I'm pretty sure these details are correct.

I'd say Liberace from the 1950s. His outfit and mannerisms became the first clue to his sexual orientation. But he was a talented pianist!

My guess would be Elton John. Everyone HAD to know he was gay. I know he's not American, but you've seen pics of him in the 70's right?
As for an American, I'd say Ellen Degeneres (sp?)
