I've never watched the show, nor Survivor, as both premises sounded despicable to me. What I hear from people who watch American Idol is that they really enjoy other people's humiliation and enjoy watching people be put down. It suggests to me a sadism or horrific insecurity on the part of the viewers.

I think people watch the show for three reasons: 1) To see how talented some of these men/women are who audition for/ and make it on the show,2) To see exactly how bad some of the people auditioning can get, and 3) to witness the judges reactions (especially Simon ) to both. From there its just like all of the other reality shows, you pick who you want to win, vote and then tune in each week to see whether or not they have made it. Sometimes, it becomes a popularity contest, but there have also been some legitimate talent to emerge from the show.

I am a 34 year old male, and I have no idea why I like it. The first few shows aboiut the auditions are just frigging hilarious. You have to watch those. People are just awful, and they think that they are great. Funny stuff. Then yiu wind up getting hooked for some reason.

I guess it's nice to see the "American Dream" come true for those who otherwise wouldn't have the money or the means of making it any other way...I love most kinds of music so that has alot to do with my interest in the show.

It's a glaring truth about the pathetic, dumbing down of America. When people find crap like that entertaining, it's time to shoot the television. I used to get irritated when my dad used to watch nothing but PBS, David Suzuki, animal programming, and any other type of educational or thought provoking programming. How right he was.

I don't. And Canadian Idol is even worse. Thank the Lord if you've never seen it. Do you have Rockstar in the states? Forgive me, I do not know. Anyhow, that one sucks too.

It's nice to listen to the songs when the people can sing. It's funny to watch the people who think they can sing, but really can't.
