My sister plans to graduate early out of high school. She has a 3.8 GPA, took AP classes, but still needs to take the SAT/ACT. She also still needs to find scholarships because she made her early graduation decision at the end of last year, so she hasn't been searching long and she plans to go to OSU. She skipped a grade so at the end of this academic year, she will be 16. I'm a sophomore in college, I go Columbia in NY and I don't really know any advice to give her. She has talked with her counselor and she has advised that my sister go ahead and do it. What kinds of advantages/disadvantages will she find in college at such a young age?

It sounds like she will do just fine academically, and for a bright student you want to make sure that they aren't bored to death, so the opportunities for her in college will be far better than anything she could get in high school. The difficult part will probably be social. It isn't so much that others will not accept her as it is that they will assume that her emotional maturity is the same as hers. There will be no one there to protect her and make sure that she doesn't go overboard as far as partying, substance use, sexual involvements, and even things as simple as making sure she eats right and sleeps enough. Her family should keep in close touch, since there are reasons why most 16-year olds still need a few years at home to mature.

If she remains in high school and takes some college courses there through the high school, they will be free and she will still earn her college credits while giving herself time to mature more and still attend all the fun stuff such as Prom and Homecoming. She may have to take 1 or 2 high school electives while she is still in that high school to remain enrolled but at age 16, with her good grades and determination, she could have her associates by the time she's 18. (Which is the when most graduate high school!)

I know someone like that from our school and it really depends on her personality. If she is the hardworking/dedicated student type and blends well with people who are, say, three years older than her, then go for it! But even if she is the hardworking student, sometimes when college students bully others (especially since she's young), academics would be affected. Decide well. It's hard to get back on track once you've been pulled down.

She may want to start off at a local small college or community college where she can still live at home while pursuing her first two years of education. This will allow her to move forward while having the support of parents (and a sister) at home to help her through any difficulties she might face.

If she is a mature, grounded 16 year old... you have nothing to worry about.

Well first she needs a high SAT score. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.

She might have a hard time fitting in and getting accepted because of being so young, but it really depends on the people.

but as far as academics, she seems like shes ready for it
