He sucks on his thumb now and never has taken a pacifier. I just started getting him to take a bottle. I have to put some baby food on the nipple otherwise he won't take the bottle. I have put some baby food on a pacifier but he spits it out when all the baby food is gone I'm just thinking ahead, it'll probably be easier to get him to stop taking a pacifier as opposed to stop sucking his thumb?

I don't use formula, I pump and give him that milk. I can't be around all the time. I am going back to school, so he will have to be fed by bottle when I am not around

And I don't want him not to eat if I have to be away, He can't come every where with me, and putting a smidge of baby food on the nipple isn't gonna hurt him one bit.

There is a window as to when to introduce a pacifier. If you go past that, there is not much chance he will take it then. My 3rd kid never took a pacifier and so I always had to nurse her to get her to calm down or whatever. When she was 3 months old, she finally found her thumb (I tried and tried to give her a pacifier, all different brands and styles also, but she had nothing to do with them). I introduced the bottle too late, so she never would take it either. So I nursed for 7 months until she took a sippy cup. Her sucking her thumb was fine with me. She was able to calm herself down whenever she needed it. When she was 2 I broke her by saying something like you need to get that out of your mouth or I would pull it out when I knew she really did not need it at that time (she would just get a fix from it). Then I put that yucky tasting fingernail polish you put on to stop biting your nails (not the pepper kind). That is what did it for her. Of course I tried it myself and it tasted yucky, but not a mean taste like the pepper ones you can buy. My other kid had a pacifier and I was always having to go find one, she would drop one and I had to find a way to clean it, always had to make sure I had one with me every time I went somewhere. I think it was more of a hassle than the thumb. Just don't let them suck it past 2 years is my thought on that.

I breastfed my son and he never used a pacifier. I wouldn't push the pacifier. He's 3 months old, it's cute when they suck their thumb. And a big ol' pacifier sticking in one's mouth is never cute. I don't think you will have a harder time getting him to stop sucking his thumb. You rarely see 3 and 4 year olds walking around sucking their thumbs, but you see a lot of them sucking pacifiers at that age, and that looks really silly.

I'm all for thumb sucking personally. They don't need you to give it to them. They can always find it in their crib in the dark (vs crying for a pacifier that has fallen out). They won't drop on the floor from their stroller or carseat etc etc. If he's not taking a pacifier and is happy with his thumb, I would NOT push it. The vast majority of thumb suckers quit on their own by the age of four anyway.

Who told you to put food and the end of the bottle or pacifier???
Baby shouldn't be given solid food until 6 months...
Why are you giving him a bottle??? Why won't you continue to breastfeed? It's perfect food for him. Have you ever tasted formula?
All my children had a pacifier, it was a real pain in the rear.. Couldn't find it when you needed it, had to wash it, etc... I think there is nothing wrong with thumb sucking, it doesn't mean that he'll do it until he's 5, and have bucked teeth....
Let what comes natural to him, he could of sucked his thumb in the womb. They all will grow out of it.

Let him have his thumb. Do you know what happens when a baby loses his pacifier in the middle of the night and can't find it? You guessed it, YOU have to get up and get it for him. My breastfed babies never took a pacifier, I quit trying.

Actually you should focus on getting him to quit sucking his thumb more neither is good for him when his teeth start coming in so instead of putting him through it twice just work on making him to stop sucking his thumb he is young enough he will probably quit shortly if you just gently take his thumb out of his mouth on a regular basis and train him now not to do that

Honestly, both methods can mess your teeth up. The pacifier is going to harder to ween than his thumb. You can put the baby mittens on to keep his hand from going in his mouth. You shouldn't introduce him to the pacifier.

My son took his pacifier till after he substitute into 3. I actually have a 2 twelve months previous who nevertheless makes use of her pacifier. i in my view does no longer attempt to wean him from it so early. little ones choose something that factors them with convenience, fairly whilst they are getting to grasp new issues ie. strolling, potty training. in case you're taking the pacifier and shrink the very tip of it off and steadily shrink a sprint extra of it off till the can extremely shop it in his mouth, then he will provide it up. this would take a pair of weeks to do, whether it works!

Some breast fed babies will NEVER take a pacificer and I personally wouldn't give him one. He is obviously not getting enough sucking time and comfort; perhaps a bottle with only water in it whenever he wants it. He won't be sucking his thumb or the pacificier. Godloveya.
