Growing up we had 4 exchange students live with us, 3 Germans and 1 Japanese girl.
KiKumi, our Japanese student also didn't know how to speak English, but she was excellent at reading and writing, so keep a pen and paper handy at all times.
I suggest taking them places that are unique to where you live. Is there something that traditional in your town or region that would be fun....for example, I grew up in Arizona so we took our students to a cowboy themed dinner.show place. It had hay rides, gunfights, men on horses etc. For the times when we had a student longer we always went up to the Grand Canyon, or out to the desert for hiking and horseback riding.
Your student might also want to go to the Mall, I know it's so cheezy, but alot of times they'll want to get American branded things cheaper, like jeans, shoes, etc.
Also you might have a family night where they can show you some of their culture, like cook a favorite food, and you can share your favorites. The best thing would be to ask them when they get to your home what it is they want to do the most, then try and do that. Have fun, and take lots of pictures!!

if u r still in school, get permission for them to accompany u to school. Take them to church with you. Do normal American things such as attend a ball game, buy groceries, go to the movies, have a picnic. Eat traditional American foods.I hope you have a great time.

Where are you?
Take them to
-the most famous tourist spot or natural attraction in your area.
-the best mall
-make sure you ask them if there is anything they had hoped to see, because they have probably done research on your area.
-ask them if they like baseball, if you are near a major league park. japanese people like baseball a lot and they understand it.
-things that are very american that they might not have in japan, like rodeo, state fair, football game, diners
