11) (y-2)/(y+3) - y/(2y+6)
= 2(y-2)/(2y+6) - y/(2y+6)
= (2y - 4 - y)/(2y+6)
= (y-4)/[2(y+3)]
12) You have 5 a's on top and 1 a on bottom, so you will be left with 4 a's on the top
You have 1 b on the top and 2 b's on the bottom so you will be left with 1 b on the bottom
Answer: 4a^4/b
13) The bottom of the fraction is 5.
Does 5 ever equal zero? NO; therefore, no values are excluded
14) Combine like terms. Which terms can you combine?
15) When you divide by a fraction you multiply by its reciprocal
(3/4) divided by (4/5) is the same thing as (3/4) times (5/4)
You multiply the numbers on top. 3 times 5 is 15.
You multiply the numbers on the bottom. 4 times 4 is 16
(3/4)(5/4) = 15/16

Since it appears you're attempting them, I'll try to help.

Its a little difficult to follow your questions, brackets would help.

for 12:

I see 48a^5b/12ab^2. I believe that equals 4a^4/b
48/12 =4, a^5/a = a^4 and b/b^2 = 1/b

13: if its (x+8)/5 or x +(8/5) there are still no limits on x. It can take any value. if we had 5/(x-8) THEN x could not take the value 8, since we can't divide by 0.

for 14, It looks sort of ... simple. Is it not just x^2 +39?

15: (3/4) / (4/5) = (3/4)*(5/4) = (3*5)/(4*4) = 15/16

11. I'm not sure if I'm reading your fractions correctly in the first example, but I'm pretty sure that you are correct.

12. should be just b in the denominator, not b^2. Everything else is correct.

13. Check this one again. The only values you would have to worry about would be anything that would make the denominator equal to zero. If x equal to 8 makes the denominator zero, then that would be correct, but that's not the case here.

14. Combine your like terms.

15. Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction, so you need to do 3/4 times 5/4.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Too many enablers on this forum. Can you see that the questioner cut and pasted from his/her on-line problem sets?

Try doing your own homework. Otherwise, you won't learn a thing. If you don't get it, ask the teacher for help.
