I always round it so I'm leaving between 15 and 20% Higher for good service of course! Never less than one dollar at lunch or two dollars at dinner.

I never leave less than 15% without talking to a manager. If you get crappy service, trust me the restaurant wants to know!

I worked as a waitress when I was in college.
Usually around 15% for lunch and 20% for dinner.
But on speciall occassion like valentine day, usually people are very generous giving the tip (for the cork service, etc).
And if the waitress did a really nice service and the food is good, it would hurt giving more.
Don't give them small tip if the service was unpleasant, you should talk to their manager instead.

It should be 15%... however, if i don't like the service or the waitress is being rude, i don't leave anything!!! I know that they basically live on thier tips, but so do i as a cab driver and i don't blame some people. There's days where i'm not in a good mood and people can see that and don't tip.. i don't care!!!

I start with 18% and add or subtract based on service. The highest I've gone is about 25% and the lowest is 10%.

I also tend to tip a higher % in lower cost restaurants. they do as much work and have a lower priced meal to base the tip on.

20% is the standard now. As long as you are giving good service. I have served for many years and believe that taking care of your guests, knowing the menu, and anticipating needs are all very important parts of a servers job.
You are not just an order taker you need to creat an experience.
If you can't do that then you should find a new job.

What I do is tip 20% if it's really good service. 15% for just okay service. And whatever change I have in my pocket if they suck out loud. How I calculate it is I multiply the tax (which is 5% here in Massachusetts) by 3 to get the 15% and by 4 to get the 20%.

A special education teacher I work with tells his students to take the tax and triple it. I am assuming you have a tax rate around 6%. I know DC, Delaware, and some other places have highers rates around 9%, then you double it.

I usually start off the beginning of the meal at 20%, then add or subtract as necessary based on the quality of the service.

Please, Please. Don't ever tip less then 15%. Anywhere, In any country. Your server has a hard job(believe it or not) There are alot of factor that you do not know about that makes their jobs difficult. They are paid 1/2 of minimum wage in America plus tips.
I always tip at leaast 20 % unless they are really bad at their job and then I will tip only 15%. But please take care of your servers ccorrectly!
