To start this off, yes, I have already tampered with the Windows settings. Utilizing the Windows features is an easy, practical, way. But the one thing is fore sure, it's not very 'secure'. (Sorry, Gates...) I need to disable things like "automatic updates, the 'Run' feature, deny access to the command prompt...the list goes on. So is there a '.bat' file or other executable (or similar) that i can create? (i.e if admin logs, then no limits; if 'user' logs, then limit to these...) How about, is there (free/cheap) software to do this with? (Should be self-explanitory). In either case, if you can, please provide a personal experience- and how you over-came it, and a link to a reference or an application download. Thank you to those who respond to topic.

Get the Windows Updates for the Security and Critical updates.

Use a firewall. You might try the free version of Zone Alarm from http://www.zonelabs.com

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster

Keep your Anti-virus up to date, and run regular scans.

Use FireFox for general browsing. Visit http://www.mozilla.com it's free, safer than IE and resists popups.

I will say that AVAST antivirus free edition is a must have on every single computer. Ive been trying and testing antivirus for years. I almost tried all. most of them are not free like Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, Panda, Trend Micro. etc. what these antivirus i just mentioned failed to detect and kill, can be all detected and destroyed by Avast antivirus. Avast keep updating as soon as a new definition arrives that means an little and fast update everyday. its fast done in few seconds compared to others which it longer and its not up to date. And above all Avast free edition share some characteristics of the professional edition especially for the virus databank.
order of effectivness will be Avast (1 free up to date always), mcafee and trend micro (2 not free but effective as well) bitdefender and panda (3 not free less effective) norton (dont even consider norton its crap. not up to date. and even if you can detect, you cant delete or clean the file. that happen 95% of time)

the second must have is firewall. Kerio is the best. Its also free if you dont want the pro version. the best of all firewall. Ive tested some firewall like norton, mcafee, bidefender, zonelab. Kerio is probably the easiest to set up (the easy mode) and the most configurable (advanced mode, but for experienced user). Its probably the most configurable on the market. and the strongest firewall ive seen to date. Its the most compatible firewall with anyother program. Since i installed it no more virus can come in and no pop up anymore. I fully in control of my computer.
order of effectiveness: kerio (1 free) mcafee (2 very effective but no free) bitdefender (2 or 3) zonelab ( less compatible than others and less effective) norton( bottom line again. happens to not block all the stuff less effective of all firewalls. very bad for configuration no control at all for more advanced user)

hi, you can try a more secure browser.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:
