I've tested them all, and believe me, that was a challenge. Sometimes the detergent gets out the most spills and spots is not the one that is best for your clothes, or your family. Some laundry detergents are particularly hard on colored fabrics, fading them and giving dark colors a whitish cast.
After more testing than you can imagine, I have picked one detergent that I believe can be all things to all people: PUREX. It is gentle on clothes and gentle on you, and available in enough varieties so that you can decide whether you want additives and fragrance, etc. It is gentle on colors, tough on whites and with the addition of Twenty Mule Team Borax, can remove the very worst messes. For general laundry, just follow the directions on the box or bottle. I am a liquid soap kind of Queen, because i like to measure out my detergent in the cap, and then do a little pre-spotting with it before i toss the clothes and the balance of the detergent in the machine.

No your discount brand of detergent is not as good as the name brand. I used tide or cheer for years and then a dermotologist told me to use sun detergent and I did and within months all my clothes turned dingy and drab. I went back to Tide without bleach...and now they are clean and bright again...

The brand names are worth the price for sure. I love Tide and use All, since it is less expensive and just as good.

Depends. Sometimes you get what you pay for. The cheaper ones tend to pack more petroleum, which causes more build up on your clothes. I like to use Arm and Hammer scent and dye free to prevent that dingy build up.
