I have a table that has a 2x4 glued to it, the only thing holding it on there is a layer of wood glue. How do I melt the wood glue to get the board off? I tried prying it with several different tools but am just damaging the top of the table.

Use a solvent. One of these should do the trick: acetone, toluene, xylene or lacquer thinner

Follow the directions of use on the containers carefully.

What is the best way to disassemble a glue joint?
The key to the disassembly of glue joints is weakening the bond. For Titebond Original and Titebond II, raising the glue joint temperature with a heat gun or a blow dryer will reduce the glue's strength. Steam from an iron may also work for Titebond Original. Placing a few drops of water on the edge of a joint made with Titebond Liquid Hide Glue will, after absorbed, cause the joint to weaken.

If you can't melt the glue, try cutting a notch in the 2x4 close to the table top. Then pry it off, but pry against something like a shim or some kind of thin piece of wood to protect the table top. Then sand the remaining glue off.

Jonnae L and whtecloue are on the right track. There is a tool called a Heat Gun, which is like a high-temperature blow dryer. Heat is one of the most common methods of softening adhesives, and won't damage your table quite like solvents, but if you are not careful, the heat can blister your table's finish or even burn the wood.

You might try this... Cut or chisel as much of the 2x4 away that you can. Apply the heat to what's left of the 2x4 so you aren't directing the heat on your table.

Saturate the poster with lighter fluid and let it soak the paper for a few minutes. Slowly start peeling the poster off. You will have to work at the adhesive after you get the poster off by working the fluid around the area. The fluid will remove all adhesives. There is also a product call Bestine available in art supply stores but it is expensive when compared to the price of lighter fluid that you can get at the grocery store and has the same outcome.

This might be a dumb answer, but would a blow dryer work?
