It all depends on what you want to do and what kind of budget you have.
If you want to stay within Florida, go to Miami. It is always warm there and the beaches are great.
Washington DC is a great place to take kids. Show them all the wonderful historical sites the city has to offer.
NYC has a wide variety of things to do for families.

Two years ago I went to London (the town of my birth) and had a good time visiting my few remaining relatives. I spent 3 weeks, but England is just not the England I remember from when I was a kid. The countryside is still beautiful, but the city itself made me feel like a foreigner! I thought I was at the League of Nations. As I am now on oxygen, I will not be able to travel any more - and I will not miss it! I have been around the world 4 times and that's enough for anyone! CJ

Fly into Boston, then drive up to Vermont and stay in Burlington and Middlebury. Check out the lake and the fall foliage. If you're from Florida the kids will get a chance to see Mountains and the change of seasons. Return to Boston and go to at least one day of The Head Of the Charles and the Science Museum.

I was going to say Munich Germany. That is the obvious answer. If you want to stay in the USA, the links give lists of the Oktoberfests in the USA. But you should go to Munich and see the original.
Otherwise, you can always go somewhere for Hallowe'en.
According to a website, 'The most elaborate and outlandish Halloween parades are held at Greenwich Village in New York City and in San Francisco, California.'

The weather in Phoenix is great in October. If you are into outdoor activities, the possibilities are endless. The Pointe Hilton at South Mountain is a very nice resort where you can relax and be pampered, enjoy the water park, go horseback riding, go hiking and more. You could also drive up to the Grand Canyon, staying over one night at the canyon or in the Flagstaff/Sedona area.

I'm from Virginia, and the mountains and fall color are BEAUTIFUL in October. Williamsburg is not in the mountains, but it's a great place that's great for kids. There's Busch Gardens, tons of historical sites, and it's quite wholesome! DC is a great time too! If you want mountains, Charlottesville (where UVA is) is breathtaking!...good luck!
