The mucus membrane of your eyeballs can be irritated from ultraviolet light (welding, reflection off of water or snow) to the point where they feel like they're sunburned (stinging, dry, gritty) however, any redness is due to the blood vessels on the surface. Your eyes won't turn red as say, your arm or neck when sunburned which is your skin reacting.

you can "sunburn" your eyes - but its different than sunburning your skin.

And if you've sunburnt the whites - the iris and pupil will have gotten it too.
