It doesn't sound like this is an investment question, as many people addressed the importance of a good neighborhood for resale, but a question regarding residence. So with that said, I would absolutely do it as long as it was not a high crime or drug infested area. I would definitely be cautious, not saying low income people are criminals, but I would use an extra amount of wisdom regarding my personal safety. A house is what you make of it, and not every house is a home. Perfect example... My Grandmother lives in a low-income apartment community designed for people who receive state sponsored assistance. She is one of two caucasian people living in this apartment community. Some people would hide in their apartment with the doors locked and lights off after seeing the other residents of this community, but instead, my Grandmother has made a point to introduce herself and befriend her "scary looking" neighbors. She is constantly buying little trinkets from the local Dollar Store for the children, and loaning her car out to a few single Mom's. She chose to make the most of her community, and they all love her. I am constantly reminding her to look her door, but she just laughs. Even the thuggish of the thuggish call her "Grandma", and offer to help her with her trash. Bottom line, as she puts it, we are all people, just trying to get by.

If it was safe, and I didn't have much $, sure. I've lived in a lot of lower-class neighborhoods in my life (a trailer home actually would have been a step up for us when I was growing up). But, if you have the $, I think it's worth it to pay for a home in the country or a nicer neighborhood and not have to drive by a bunch of cars jacked up on cinder blocks on my way home from work.

Sometimes poor people are the best friends to have . They would give you the shirt off their back. And really what is lower class ? When we stand before the Lord we will all bow down the same. So think about that! You never know when you will be meeting up with an Angel & not know it.

Maybe for a while as long as the people are decent. Having less education doesn't make a person bad.

Great question! You want the worst house on the best block not the opposite.
