I'm looking for demographic, and qualitative (income, education level, etc) data for a particular town in Illinois. I'd also like data on the 5 mile radius around the town, and 10 mile, 15 mile.

Is this something I can find free of charge by doing a modest amount of research, or will I have to hire a service to do so?

You can get the information for free from the US bureau of the census - they make available all the data from the most recent census. Unfortunately that is from 2000, and may be a little out of date. You can check website for the specific city/town and see if they have a department of city planning - they often post more recent updates specific to the location.

yes you can, go to a real estate website and put in the zip code. Then when it asks about neighborhood demographics, click on it, and there you go.
