After more than 20 years since the original tree expired, 3 small trees emerged. They were dug up to share. One is left and I need to know how to care for it and how long it will live not being planted. It is drying up at the bottom though in water. Help please.

You need to make sure you're not going to damage those roots and the hole you're putting it in must be double the size of the root ball.

If you have any nice black leaf mulch or mushroom manure thoroughly mix it with a bit of peat moss and fill in your hole. Immediately make and maintain a "fertilizing donut" around the tree, approximately three feet away from the trunk. The donut is just good top soil mixed with mushroom manure and kept moist, you can plant some annuals in the top layer to hold the moisture.

The idea of the donut is to feed the roots, which are never at the trunk. In the fall mix in more leaf mulch or mushroom manure.
