Going to Sydney in 2 days (my first International trip out of the US) for 2 weeks!!! Would like to do some of the touristy things, but I'm more interested in the non tourist locations. Would like to get a feel for true Australian culture.

I'll be staying at Star City, which I guess is in the Pyrmont area.

And...where can I get a good Vegemite sandwich?

Thanks!!!

Here's a site which gives off the beaten path travel advice for Sydney. I saw so many things there I didn't do when I was there in November I want to go right back. You will have a wonderful time....it's my favorite city in the world!

And, by the way, you can buy small souvenir jars of vegemite in any Woolworth. store in their grocery area. That's about all you'll need unless you become an instant convert.

Haha, yup. The western suburbs are where you go if you want to see Sydney's middle of the road sort of areas. There's really nothing to see in the western suburbs...it's kinda the Australian version of urban sprawl. The temperatures are high, the public transport system is practically non-existent, there are a lot of bogans and the housing is cheap but miles from anywhere. That pretty much sums up the western suburbs. Still go there, by all means, but you'll be bored quickly and long to go to where more famous things are located.

By the way, you generally don't have to go to a cafe or a restaurant to get a decent vegemite sandwich, mainly because they don't sell them, and if they do they'll be on the children's menu. Simply buy a loaf of bread and a small jar of vegemite (I'll discuss the reason for buying a small one later) and make your own. That way you can have them whenever you want and you can take the vegemite back to your hotel room.

Okay, the reason you buy a small jar of vegemite is....well to be blunt, you are an American...and Americans spread peanut butter on their bread 5 centimetres thick and gobble it down (I am also guilty of doing this) like there's no tomorrow.
Vegemite is NOT like peanut butter. It has a very strong taste and so you only need the thinnest scraping per slice of bread. That's the way us Aussies eat it. You would get a nasty shock if you slopped on ten tablespoons of vegemite. The other reason for buying a small jar is if you really do find it too gross for words, you are only throwing a small bit away instead of wasting your money on a huge economy sized jar...

The western subberbs would be the go. Singles should head to panthers leages club in penrith or for a down to earth and cheep experience simply take a train ride through the city circle ( rail ) and get off at each stop and wander. Dont worry Sydneys public transport is cheep, easy and a fun way of seeing the city.

HAHAHA Vegie sandwich

As a traveller this first trip will change your life - I've never been to OZ heading there in a week to meet my girlfriends parents and live for a few years. My advice is live in a hostel for awhile and meet everyone you can, then just bum around. Come out to WA many of my Aussie friends say Perth is THE place to check out

Also mate, you're gonna find out that vegemite is for your toast in the morning and if you are like most sepos you're not gonna like it that much - I'm a canuck and I can't stand it

As a born Westy (which i hate to admit - as do most westies) theres not a hell of alot there! Parklea markets are great and so is Panthers Club in Penrith, but you'll definately get a look at NON TOURISTY stuff in the west LMAO! Take you about an hour on the trains from the city to get out there.

As for a vegie sandbo, you'll grab one anywhere........no place in oz is Vegie free!
