Very good question.
I believe that it is a very powerful genre of music. It is also misunderstood and viewed upon as "just meaningless noise." I think it takes an enormous amount of talent to create such beautiful art. Also, people mistaken heavy metal for being the cause of suicides. Suicidal people can relate to heavy metal music's lyrics, but it sure as hell can't cause you to kill yourself.
Society today views heavy metal as "the devil's music", and people are blind as to open their eyes to the actual talent and amazing pieces of work that are written. Society cannot see past just the "satanic" gimmick that heavy metal bands put on, and don't understand it's attracting those who are into death. I'm not trying to bash anyone, but it aggrivates me to see people thinking that heavy metal is nothing but shitt and noise, because it really and truly is not.

Hmmm...
I've heard some hardcore heavy metal bands and i have to admit that i'm not a true fan. I find that i have to put my speakers on low when i usually put the volume on high (even for classical). It does nothing for my senses.
However, i have heard some songs which i can't believe i forgot because they were so good... but they were half heavy metal/half guitar and piano solo. Now that was incredible. To go from hardcore undistinguishable screaming lyrics to this insanely amazing guitar solo.... it made my toes tingles. I don't think anything has ever moved me so much. There's this one song that started off with piano and then guitar and then heavy metal and then it faded out to just the guitar and piano and the guy who was screaming just 30 seconds before was crooning into the mic with such a sensual tilt to his voice. I was in total rapture.
So in total truth, it depends.
Would i choose to listen to heavy metal over classical or alternative?
Probably not.
Have i ruled it out as nothing more than crap?
Absolutely not.
It just depends on the rhythm, the band, the lyrics, ect...
It has to move me.

name at least five heavy metal bands in your next question and I can tell you.
Right now, i don't know who you consider to be "heavy metal".
black sabbath? van halen?
Heavy metal may have been used as a jibe initially by a number of music critics but was quickly adopted by its adherents. Other, already-established bands, such as Deep Purple, who had origins in pop or progressive rock, immediately took on the heavy metal mantle, adding distortion and additional amplification in a more aggressive approach.

I like metal, but can't call myself a true fan. That is I don't wear the gear, attend festivals etc. I like Slayer, Pantera, Metallica & bits of the lesser known names. I like it in doses. I discover a different band every once in a while....

I think it has a sort of 80's-ish sound to it. Also the singers don't usually have the best voices. For this reason I don't listen to it, but all the people I know who do are pretty cool.

personally, I don't like it. I know some people who listen to it and are fine, but I also know some people who listen to it and completely go wacko- I guess I'm just not in to moshing or death rituals or blood-imitation shirts, but like I said, some people listen to it and are fine, but I prefer things that don't sound so harsh. I'm into country.
