It is very simple and I don't understand why ppl ask this question so often.
Marijuana can not be made legal because it is a drug that alters the mind and does harm to the body even when used in MODERATION.
In layman's terms, one beer does no harm to your body and does not get you high, whereas, one toke off of a joint does.

Because there is no accurate way to test and quantify the level of intoxication. A blood-alcohol test will tell just HOW drunk someone is if they are pulled over in a traffic stop, get injured or injure someone else on the job, etc.
Since that is not the case with marijuana testing, insurance companies would have to pay claims that resulted from intoxicated pot smokers if it was legal. Because it is not legal, they can deny claims when the use was a week ago.
That's one scenario.
Another is that it requires no processing, as does tobacco. Anyone could grow their own or sell it on the black market. The government wouldn't realize much tax benefit from its legalization, thus no incentive.

Yeah, it's certainly politics.
But, when one is high one is certainly impaired. A sudden legalization would lead to a shift in our culture and an increase in .... stupid things happening. People could blame weed for their actions, I believe.
If they made it legal, they'd have the put an age limit on it and then kids getting high would face a stiffer penalty than now.
And America is not isolated, sending such a signal to the more conservative nations would hamper alliances.

It became illegal at the instigation of cotton growers. Hemp was a much better product, it did not need insecticides or very much watering, taking care of etc. The product was tougher and longer lasting than cotton. They instituted the marijuana scare to eliminate the competition.
It's not legal today because it makes too much money for too many important in one way or the other, people. What would our economy do if we did not have to spend so much money on policing drugs, keeping drug offenders in prison, lawyers prosecuting and defending them. Many many reasons.

You are all idiots. Pot does not impair anything. It relaxes you. It is much milder than any prescription med with less side effects. The problem with legalizing it is all of you morons who never smoked it, but seem to know all about it. Compairing pot to alcohol is ridiculous. People don't smoke weed and get in car accidents. Alot of truck drivers smoke pot on long hauls to help calm their nerves. Show me one instance of someone O.D.ing on pot. morons.

It is politics, when reagan announced the war on drugs, people seemed to have forgotten a lot. I like Reagan, but not that i use drugs or want to, but there isn't really any good reasons it should be illegal. Drugs used to be used for religous practices long ago

Because a great many people are screwed up on booze and illegal drugs as it is - the real costs to society are enormous (check out the percentage of people in prison as a direct or indirect cause of alcohol or illegal drugs) the percentage of highway injuries and death due to DUI and the percentage of "domestic abuse" reports as a direct result of alcohol abuse -
Do you really think it's a good idea to throw another log on this fire?

Some holier-than-thou, conservative group back during the times of Prohibition decided to illegalize weed, too. But since it's not as addictive as alcohol is, it didn't get re-legalized because people didn't fight for it.
