I heard that the most popular sport in the world is soccer, and baseball and football used to be the main sports, but it seems like nascar is getting pretty popular.

You're actually mixing both worldwide and American sports.
Soccer is not hugely popular in America. It is too slow paced.
Baseball is losing some of it's luster with the steroid scandal. It can recover, but it will take time and players remaining clean, and the scandal totally being put to rest. Baseball is gaining popularity in new markets as well, beyond those of Japan. That will help the sport overtake soccer IMO.
Football, as far as I am concerned, can die off tomorrow and I won't care. But I'm a jaded former high school and juco player, so that's where my reasoning comes in. But it is a steady sport without much room for growth, because it competes with other sports during it's season, where baseball only competes with NASCAR.
NASCAR is the biggest up and coming sport. It is really the only sport where over 100,000 people come together every Nextel Cup Race (and some events get over 200,000), has a large TV audience, and the drivers are more easily accessible than the athletes in other sports. It is also pure strategy revolved around physics and math. The cars do not just go in circles. Pit stops are used to make adjustments to the cars so they drive better. There was one quote I read somewhere - "NASCAR is like chess. You can learn it in 10 minutes, but it would take 10 lifetimes to learn all the intricacies."

I think Nascar has a long way to go before it can even begin to rival soccer, football, or even baseball. While it has been gaining popularity, it has nowhere near the popularity that the four or five major sports have around the world!

Soccer is boring, baseball is for drug addicts. Football is the ultimate but I have to say nascar is a close second.

soccer is the worlds most popular because it is played in many nations. football and baseball are still the most popular in ther US.....myself, I'm a motocross\supercross fan.
