The man was a great president, but were he serving today, he would be hated more than Bush.
Teddy Roosevelt, encouraged Panama to rebel against Columbia when we were not allowed to build the Panama Canal. We encourage a rebellion, and bam, we are allowed to commence construction.
Teddy Roosevelt was famous for "battleship diplomacy." Give a huge show of military force to persuade other leaders to see your point of view. As he described it: "speak softly and carry a big stick." If Bush were to do that today, the whole world would scream.
Before he became president, he stirred up popular support for the Spanish-American War. The results weren't in about the USS Maine, and history has shown that it was an accident, but Teddy wanted a war, and he got it.
But here is my personal favorite: The US Navy had built a massive fleet and Roosevelt wanted to show it to the world in a display of military might. One problem: congress only gave enough money for the Great White Fleet to go halfway around the world, not all the way. So Teddy sends the fleet halfway around the world and tells congress that if they want it back they will have to appropriate the money to sail it the rest of the way. Genius.

Of course, a man that invaded Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Panama, advocated and eventually got his war with Spain. A very diplomatic man, I'm sure. That Nobel Peace prize he won was such a fluke, Japan was like a pawn of the Americans, to say that he negotiated peace between Japan and Russia is such farce when in reality, he pretty much told Japan to stop it and Japan had no choice but to listen.
