After you have installed a new HD and properly connected all the cables, you still need to format your HD. The Windows XP will not recognized a new HD until it has been formatted. The easiest way to format your new HD is by running the installation CD that came with the box.
Another way is to go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, and then Disk Management. The new HD will show up as not initialized. Right click on it and select Format.
Setting master & slave will help your computer boot faster (it knows where to look for the operating system), but not doing so will not prevent your HD from being recognized by Windows XP operating system.

FIRST THING YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DO WHEN INSTALLING A NEW DRIVE IS CHECK THE JUMPERS.
im tired of people not reading the directions who dont know what they are doing. Im tired of taking $50 from them for fixing it.
Take out the HD, and on the back of it, there should be jumpers. Read which one shoudl be which. If it is the master for that ribbon, set it to master, if not, set it to slave. if you dont know, set it to cable select. read the manual if you are not sure.
Ok, go to my computer. Get the highest OPEN drive letter. EX. 1st hd = C:, CD Rom = d:, new drive would be read as e:, in the address bar, type E:, (substitute e with your eltter).
Secondly, go to Adminitrative Tools, COmputer Managment, Storage, Disk Management (Local), and see if it recognizes your drive there. It could be a problem with windows just sensing the drive.

Means that it's not formatted/partitioned as recognizeable by Windows, even though the Bios recognizes it as a second hard drive, it needs to be formatted, The files that are on it may not be recognized by Windows.

Stupid, that's why you're not supposed to add a secondary slave. Try putting in a partition and accessing it at start up without the other one being in use.

If this is a "pull", you'll have to remove the Windows install that's already on it.
