You can self publish which means you pay for all the printings and the distribution etc.

Generally to get a publisher interested today, you need an agent.

www. absolutewrite.com can answer many of your questions.

Oh, the complete answer to this would be huge, actually. I'll try to give a brief rundown of the tons of research I've done:

If you want to go through a traditional publisher, you need to start by deciding which publishers would be the most right for your book, then start writing query letters. The query has to tell about you and your book, but briefly. Look for examples online, since a bad query will be thrown out regardless of the quality of your book. You have to read the guidelines for each publisher. Some will let you submit to them at the same time as others (multiple submissions) and some won't. It can take 2 to 6 months for a reply and sometimes longer.

Be aware that the bigger companies get thousands of queries a day and only accept a handful, if that. A rejection doesn't mean your book doesn't have potential. They only accept what they think will sell well, not what they think has the best quality.

Self-publishing is a viable option with many paths. Do a lot of research first, though. There are wonderful POD companies and not so wonderful companies. Compare prices and which services they offer.

You might look into writing.com. There are many authors there who have published both ways. I run a self-publishing group there to help others taking that path.

Good luck!

Go to your local bookstore and ask them where the section on this is. (It will generally be in reference.) There are several books about getting books published--I think there's even a "Getting Published for Dummies," but don't quote me on that last part. There is no better source than someone else who has done it.

Get to the bookstore or library and get a copy of the "2007 Writer's Market." It has listing of numerous publishers, plus lots of tips and information on the process.
