I have to write an analysis paper using works from Herman Melville. I have read "Bartleby the Scrivener" and chapters from "Moby Dick" any suggestions as how to start. (must use broad theme of passive resistance)

The one thing profesor syas not to do is talk about the author. I have to do an oral presentation on the author and my paper should pick up where it leaves off. Does that make sense?

I haven't read Melville so I can't be extremely specific, but if there are themes that are similar and different in the books then you can do the good ol' compare and contrast.

You can start with something like, Melville wrote many works that reflected his many views of ....... through his stories (assuming that they do!) A comparison between similarities and differences amongst his works is essential to comprehending his views in regards to .....mankind, life...whatever the books teach I guess.

Eh, hopefully this helps. It generally works for most books.

You will also need to read the author's biography since that is actually your focus of analysis--his styles, his sentiments, his moral views and all as manifested by the words he put in the characters he developed in the stories.

Then begin the paper by a brief biographical sketch of the author. That will be your introduction.

The discussions will involve the appraisal of the author's views, and sentiments and how these could be found in his works. Those views can also be seen by how he resolves the conflicts in his stories.

At the conclusion, you may cite why the works of Melville are important for individual moral position and enlightenment--how they help define one's views and all of that.
