Why then do the Republicans choose it as their color? (especially since they are far from communism.)

Being the silent majority in America makes the Republicans feel safe in expressing the fact that our "Democracy" is more like a mix between socialism and backdoor capitalism. Socialism accepted color was also red. We live in a country that puts a cap on the amount of milk a dairy farmer can produce because of waste which is somehow supposed to lower the price of dairy products but then drastically increases the cost of milk, yet the government won't regulate the price of gas. How much tax do you pay on milk? That is why the government doesn't care how much they sell. How much tax is paid on gas? In case you don't know that answer, it is the same as any other non-food product only it is figured in for you before you buy.

I did a bit of research
The first Post Color TV election Chose Red for the Republican Party. That was in 1960 and we have a 46 year tradition of Red being the Redpublican party.
It was not until the 2000 election that color became a talking point.

Traditionally the opposite was true, when Reagan was President the table clothes at RNC dinners and meetings were blue. It was only beginning in 1984 that the broadcast channels bega using the colors we are now familiar with... and they were wrong at the time and called for it.
Since then the coor for republicans has been Red and the Democrats has been blue. The parties had nothing to do with it, the media assigned the colors.
