I am purchasing this for my son, I know nothing about them except they play music. Which would be the better to buy?
Do either do anything different or is it just a personal preference?

An Ipod is an MP3 player, but is made my Apple. Althought Ipod is most popular, it is probably the worst kind of MP3 player you can get. Ipod forces you to use their software, and it is annoying. Other MP3 players are plug-n-play like USB devices and the Dell DJ. You should not get an Ipod because you have to use their software. If you have a Dell DJ, you could go to your neighbor's house and slap some songs on there without taking an Apple installation CD.
Most MP3 players, including the Ipod can play WMAs aswell, but that's a different topic.

It is an MP3 player made by Apple.
There are a whole lot more not made by Apple.
But the Ipod seems to be the most popular one at the moment, because of its versatility and various models that are available.
If he is really young, get him the Ipod Shuffle. It's only about $70, and holds 500 songs.

OK, I just bought an Ipod Nano for my daughter tonight for her birthday, and the salesman said when you buy an Ipod, you are mostly paying for the name. He said they are basically the same, except some of the Ipods, you can download TV shows to watch too. Anyway, I don't think they are much different, except, we settled on the Ipod because it had more accessories, like cooler cases in several different colors,etc. i would suggest going to a good electronics store and asking the employees because they can be very helpful. I would go to a store where the employees are not paid on commission, so they won't try to sell you the highest priced item, and they will really try to help you buy the best item for your son! a little of both. i have the video ipod that can play videos. but other than that, they're pretty much the same. ipods come with itunes (its a program to download music from) i dont know much about other mp3 players, but i know that they are cheaper in price. apple ipods are more trendy, so kids want those, but it all really depends on how many songs he's going to put on it. if he's not going to put many songs on it then i would say get one of the cheaper ones. i think ipod makes a 69 dollar one and it holds maybe 150 songs? not sure though...

Ipod is from the company apple it's much nicer than a regular mp3 player. Mostly everyone is going to say ipod is better. Get him an Ipod Nano he will be greatful!

Same thing really. The Pro of a mp3 player like Creative Lab's Micro Photo Zen is that it holds twice the amounts of songs for just about the same price. Plus it has a FM radio.

An ipod is the first type of handy mp3 player. It was made by Apple and became popular because it was unique, cute, and handy (but sort of overpriced). Radio Shack and a lot of others realized they could make their version of an ipod and get some of that market by not being as greedy with the price. They have the same capability in equivalent models but Apple still has the biggest market share.

an ipod uses the software of apple and mac's. So, ipod's can't get viruses. but mp3's can. mp3's all have a harddrive. Plus ipod's are the only mp3's that can play videos. There is no other mp3 players that can play videos.
