I have 1gb ram, 7.1 surround sound, and Linux DSL. it wont play cds or dvds.

Try running alsaconf from a command line. It will try to autodetect your sound card. If you already have sound and just can't play back a CD, look at the settings of your media player. It may be pointing at /dev/cdrom. Try changing it to /dev/hdc if your CD rom drive is the secondary master drive on the computer, or /dev/hdb if it is the primary slave on the comptuer.
