Every object attract and repulse each other. This attraction and repulsion depends on the mass of the body. For example earth is a huge mass, ehnce effect of repulsive and attractive of our body acting on earth is negligible, instead attractive force that is acting on our body by the is considerable and we call it as gravitational force. Nobody Knows the true reason for the movement of the body towards the earth. There are several advanced theories on this matter that is beyond the scope of this answer . To make our children to be aware of the concept we can give the example of a magnet attracting the iron filings or a needle. And ions that gets attracted towards the anode or cathode. Here we can only say that ions have affinity to move towards the opposite charges. Static or dynamic electricity also can create such affinity on the objects that are near it. Electricians advice us not touch the iron box at the palm to check the heat and tell us to touch it at the back side of the palm to avoid attraction between the palm and fingers if electrocuted. Still the concept of attraction has remained as in-explainable.
So we can only say that the earth creates affinity to move towards it on every object around it.

Try these explanations to refine. the below website has more info:

Gravity is the name associated with the mishaps of the milk spilled from the breakfast table to the kitchen floor and the youngster who topples to the pavement to end the first bicycle ride. Gravity is the name associated with the reason for "what goes up, must come down," whether it be the baseball hit in the neighborhood sandlot game or the child happily jumping on the backyard mini-trampoline. We all know of the word gravity - it is the thing which causes objects to fall to Earth."

What is Gravity?

Gravity is a force which tries to pull two objects toward each other. Anything which has mass also has a gravitational pull. The more massive an object is, the stronger its gravitational pull is. Earth's gravity is what keeps you on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Gravity is what holds the planets in orbit around the sun and what keeps the moon in orbit around Earth. The closer you are to an object, the stonger its gravitational pull is. Gravity is what gives you weight. It is the force that pulls on all of the mass in your body.

Gravity

The gravitational attraction at the surface of a planet or other celestial body. The quantity g is often referred to simply as “gravity” or “the force of gravity” of Earth, both of which are incorrect. The force of gravity means the force with which a celestial body attracts an object, that is, the weight of the object. The letter g represents the acceleration caused by the gravitational force and, of course, has the dimensions of acceleration.

some physicists believe gravity is caused by "gravitrons" but they are so small that they havent found em yet.

no one in truth knows exactly how gravity works, just that all things with mass attract other things with mass. the bigger the mass, the greater the attraction. its actually a very weak force in comparison to the other forces that exist =3 . the only difference between gravity and the other forces (strong, weak, electromagnetic) is that gravity does not have repulsive forces, just attractive. thus on a large scale, gravity adds up rather than cancels. thus, we're on the ground rather than floating =D

a mate of mine got a doctorate investigating gravity at university.

Apparently no-one really understands it.

However they explain it by saying (in layman's terms) that an object in space disrupts the area that it occupies. This creates a flux around the object, gravity is a result of this flux- you can think of it as the flux trying to get back to where it was before the object was there.
The bigger the object the bigger the flux- so a planet has massive gravity and a banana has tiny tiny gravity

Gravity is an attraction to the center of the Earth. Though, that's the only thing I can remember from my sixth grade video...sorry.

Gravity seems to be caused by many factors, it is not just mass of a body.

because the earth is revolving at a very fast rate, it tends to attract nearby objects. Like a vacuum cleane, which has fan that rotates and attracts dust. I don't know if its right, but its a good way to explain.
