If the porch lights are not on and no lights in the windows are on, most people won't come to your house.

Unfortunately, not many parents of children old/young enough to go trick-or-treating seem to understand the concept that a dark house...as in a house without a porch light on, should be skipped. I usually have candy, and the light is on. When the candy bowl is empty, the light goes off, and we simply ignore the doorbell. If you aren't going to be home, I'd leave the porch light off. If there ARE those who know this simple "Halloween Rule", they will not be wasting time ringing the doorbell of an empty house.

Halloween is a tradition that some people do not recognize and there should be a understood level of respect for people who do not want to be bothered after dark.
It's something like the door bell that gets you out of bed on a Saturday morning only to find some Jehovah Witness people standing at your door trying to shove their religious beliefs down your tired and half awake throat, especially if you have four dogs like I do that bark when the door bell rings. Nothing bothers me more.

So if you are into Halloween that's fine for you but don't force people who don't believe in the tradition to suffer on your account. If the lights are please out stay out.

I still go trick or treating, and if you don't want people bothering you, leave out a basket with cheap candy on your front porch.

if they're stupid enough to waste their time by going up to your house when the light isn't on, they don't deserve any damn candy!
