Know I only have cold water. How can I fix it?

First, is it a gas or electric job?

If it's gas, check the pilot light. Then check the thermocouple, the rods may have gone bad. If that checks out fine, then you ought to call in a professional because it gets complicated after those two easy fixes.

If it's electric, umm...I don't know. I've only had gas ones...

Good Luck :-)

Do you need a new one? Has it burst? If not a good water heater, need to call a plumber and install a new one.

If the existing water heater is sound, and your utility bill is current, call the gas & electric company and ask if they will send a serviceman out. (Is your thermostat set properly?)

Meanwhile take modest tub baths (if you have one) and heat the water over the stove because even if you call someone for service you might not get much service until Monday. And plumbers charge much more on weekends.

If electric, check the upper thermostat for a reset button. If it's popped out, push it back in. If it pops out again in the near future then you should call a plumber. Could just be a bad thermostat or heating element which is much cheaper to replace than the whole heater!

Fix It!
if its electric...you need to buy new
if its gas....check the pilot light.
If the gas is on and the heat is still off......you will need to replace the thermostat or the heat eliment. there are books that can help you fix it...go to the library and get one.
But if incase you cannot read.....call some one.
and in the case you can not read...disregard this email.

For safetys sake Do not try to check an electric one yourself.
You CAN check the circuit breaker for it in your panel yourself.

If it is gas you should be able to tell if the pilot light is lit.

Either way I'd say you need to call a repairman.

If it's a gas heater, do you have a pilot light? maybe your thermocouple is bad.
if it's electric, maybe your element went bad, you'd need a circuit tester, or a wiggie, to test it.
