cardio over long periods of time eats away at muscle. do high intensity interval biking 3x a week for no more than 40 minutes each ride and you'll burn fat and retain muscle.

It's a great workout.
If you put the resistance up on your bike or go mountain biking, it's GREAT for building muscles.
I do spinning classes at my gym (we ride on stationary bikes along to music, do sprints, jumps, heavy resistance, etc.) and I've gotten a TON of muscle on my legs. If I lived somewhere besides Florida, I would be out bikining in the mountains.. lol.
How fast and far you have to go depends on you. As long as whatever you are doing brings your heart rate up significantly, then it'll work. I mean, you can jump up and down on your bed for an hour a day and--if that brings your heart rate up a ton--it's a good workout.

Biking is an average workout. If you break down the science of biking, it only uses the two outer large muscles of the legs. many people 'ride' in the gym but do not change their body structure much. An activity which uses more muscle, has more body parts in motion may be better. biking is fine but add other ways of working out.

My father just took it up. He hasn't lost any weight, but, he has less fat. It built up his thighs and calfs. But, it depends on how you ride. If you are riding hard, up hill, it will be more cardio. If you just want flat and long, it's endurance-like. A good rider goes around 20-22 mph, and rides for at least 3-5 hours at a time. It gets pretty expensive too, but, I watched the Hotter than Hell 100 up in Witchita Falls, Tx (worlds largest 100 mile ride) last month, and it was really awesome. Those people are freakin athletes! Good luck...

sure, but if you have use the bike to lose weight, not just own one.
Go as far and fast as you can.
When it's cold, do what I do, wear warm clothes, it really helps.
