Some are types of sites like com (commercial), edu (educational), org (non-profit org) and others are root zone country codes like ca (Canada), de (Germany), pl (Poland), ch (switzerland) and hk (Hong Kong). You can find a list of them at the iana.org web site

They are the top level domains. When you type an address it looks up the URL you typed. It will look it up in to the top level domain first directory, then it (usually) gets referred to a DNS (Domain Name Server) server for that domain, and you can have sub domains under that. The one I administer is intera.com. We have several sub-domains that refer to different parts of our network like mail.intera.com points to out email server.

They were originally issued by the US government and the US still has a great deal of control but they give other countries two letter top level domains.

So in general issued in the US you will see .com - commercial .net - usually and ISP .org - intended for organizations and .gov - these are always a government agency. There are some other three letter ones that were added recently but you get the idea.

Two letters ones include, but by no means are limited to .ca - Canada, .uk-United Kingdom, .ru-Russia .de-Germany and so on.

Those are extentions. Is like a surname to someones name or classify in a group. Eg hips dont lie.mp3, it is a music file. .jpeg are pictures, .doc are word documents. On the net is .html, .com etc. Yur question deals with mostly sites and sites are made in different areas of d world. .de is german, .ca is canada. others like .au is australian. .org is an organization. u will hardly find .us since most websites are developed in the us which is mostly .com

On the web those domain name endings indicate either the country or the intended usage. So ".org" is usually used for non-profit organizations. For example ".ca" is for Canadian sites. Here's the whole list below.

On the Internet they are Top Level Domains (tlds).

Most are country codes, such as .de for Germany (Deutschland), .ca for Canada, .pl for Poland, and so forth.

The .com means commercial, .org means organization, .edu means education.

A full list of tlds is here:
http://www.iana.org/cctld/cctld-whois.htm
Some tlds are restricted, such as .edu and .gov, only certain people can have those domains, such as schools and governments.
